About this site

Open Digital is a publication on the open digital landscape — covering digital health, AI, open source, funding, and business.

We publish analysis, observations, and reports from practice. The work spans policy, technology, and the awkward space between them: where intentions meet implementation, where standards meet running systems, where strategy meets the people writing the code.

What we cover

Digital health. Infrastructure, interoperability, clinical systems, and the slow work of making healthcare technology actually work in healthcare settings.

AI. Practical adoption, governance, and the gap between vendor claims and operational reality. Less hype, more deployment.

Open source. Sustainability, governance, funding models, and the structural questions facing the projects that quietly run most of the internet.

Funding. How open and digital infrastructure gets paid for — public funding, grants, commercial models, and the mechanisms behind them.

Business. How organisations adopt, build, and commercialise open digital approaches. The path from community project to industrial product.

Editorial stance

We're interested in the implementation layer. Plenty of writing exists on policy intent and high-level strategy; less exists on what happens when those intentions reach an organisation trying to deliver. We try to occupy that space.

We prefer evidence over advocacy, specifics over generalities, and the second-order question over the first. Where we have views, we'll be direct about them; where we don't, we'll say so.

Relationship to Open Digital Consulting

This publication is operated by Open Digital Consulting, an advisory firm working on open source governance, digital sovereignty, and digital transformation. The editorial work here is separate from the commercial practice — articles are not promotional, products are not pitched, and authors write under their own bylines with their own views.

The .info domain hosts community resources: this publication and a video archive at media.opendigital.info. Open Digital Consulting itself is at opendigital.cc.

Contributing

We welcome contributions from practitioners, researchers, and operators with something specific to say.

If you have an article in mind, get in touch at editor@opendigital.info with a short outline — what the piece is about, what you're arguing or observing, and why it matters now. We respond to everyone, though it may take a few days.

We're particularly interested in:

  • Reports from real implementations, with detail
  • Analysis that draws on hands-on experience
  • Observations from work in progress, not just finished case studies
  • Views from outside the Anglophone open source mainstream

We're less interested in:

  • General arguments for open source as a category
  • Vendor-comparative pieces
  • Pure opinion without grounding in practice
  • Anything that reads as marketing for a product or service
